Abstract

This study constitutes a follow-up to the qualitative research conducted by Mahmudah & Makmun (2022), which identified the educational values embedded in the traditional game of Cublak-Cublak Suweng. The previous research had not yet quantitatively measured the effectiveness of the game. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Cublak-Cublak Suweng game in enhancing the social-emotional and cognitive abilities of lower-grade elementary school children. A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was employed, involving 40 first-grade students from SD NU Metro. The experimental group (n=20) received thematic instruction integrated with the Cublak-Cublak Suweng game over six sessions, while the control group (n=20) received conventional instruction without traditional games. Data were collected using social-emotional observation sheets and simple cognitive tests. The results indicated that the experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in both social-emotional abilities (p < 0.01) and cognitive abilities (p < 0.05) compared to the control group. These findings confirm and extend previous research by providing quantitative evidence. The Cublak-Cublak Suweng game is recommended as an effective instructional medium for lower-grade elementary school education.
